CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Bradley County Sheriff's Department is one of three East Tennessee law enforcement agencies receiving a federal Community Oriented Policing Services grant, the U.S. Department of Justice announced today.
The department applied for funds for five positions at a total of $723,910, records show. That includes $542,932.50 as the federal grant, which is 75 percent of the cost, and $180,977.50 in local matching funds. The department received funding for one position.
The LaFollette and Sevierville, Tenn., police departments also are grant recipients. Under terms or the grant, the jobs are reserved for military veterans from the post 9/11 era.
The purpose of the grants is to save or create more than 800 police jobs nationwide, U.S. Attorney William C. Killian of the East Tennessee District said.
