For the last two years Carlton Rose has been in Atlanta working with a family-owned company called Atlanta Gold & Silver to learn the process of buying and smelting gold, silver and platinum. He is now opening his own branch of the company at 7401 East Brainerd Road.
"I'm just so glad to be home," said Rose. "I'm excited to provide a service to a town that's been good to me."
Smelting is the process where precious metals are melted into molten liquid and poured into bars. No smelting will occur on-site at the East Brainerd location, but all metal purchased will be smelted by the Atlanta Gold & Silver Company.
"I've found that a lot of people prefer to sell broken pieces and scrap metal to people who actually smelt," said Rose. "I wanted to bring that idea back to Chattanooga because I know a lot of people don't want to go to the pawn shop or the jewelry store."
According to Rose, by selling directly to a smelter sellers generally get more for their metal because the process eliminates a middleman. He said all metal rates are determined by the current market price, which can change as much as every 30 to 45 seconds.
"When you walk up to the counter everything is going to be done in front of you," said Rose of the weighing, examination and price determination process. "We are going to be transparent and up front. I live here, work here and play here. I want to make sure I deal with people in a way that's comfortable and understandable."
Rose said no cash will be awarded on the premises. All payments for precious metal will be made through a check from SunTrust Bank. There are three branches of that bank within three miles of the store, said Rose.
