One of eight potential candidates for the sessions court judgeship decided today to end his campaign, for now.

Rob Philyaw, part-time Graysville, Tenn., city court judge, was one of only three who'd already qualified for the race.

Philyaw said in a statement to supporters and a brief phone conversation with the Times Free Press that he has decided "to forego seeking this seat and will suspend my campaign."

He said he does intend to run for one of the General Sessions Court seats in 2014.

"Two judges are believed to be looking to retire," he said. "I intend to seek one of those seats."

Philyaw did not identify the judges who might retire by the next election.

The Hamilton County Commission voted 7-1 on March 1 to appoint Soddy-Daisy Judge David Norton to the post left vacant by the Jan. 26 death of Judge Bob Moon.

Philyaw received the only vote not for Norton.
