Man struck, killed by train in Polk County identified

A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a train today in Ocoee, Tenn., has been identified as Russell Ball Jr. of Fayetteville, Ark.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that Ball was walking on the railroad tracks in the 3000 block of U.S. Highway 411 when the southbound CSX train hit him.

CSX spokesman Gary Sease said that the accident happened around 12:15.

The train was comprised of three locomotives and 53 rail cars. It was hauling empty containers used to transport phosphate from Lima, Ohio, to Mulberry, Fla.

No information was immediately available about why Ball was walking on the tracks or failed to move as the train approached.

The sheriff's office said no further information will be released until the immediate family is notified.
