Stanley R. "Randy" Tucker Jr., headmaster of Girls Preparatory School since 1987, will retire effective June 30, 2014, the school announced to its alumni today.

In an online letter, Tucker said he's been planning his transition to retirement with members of the school's board of trustees since 2006.

"I can never adequately express my appreciation for having been given this incredible opportunity. As my last years here pass, I will move through each day knowing I was given a gift greater than I can repay," he wrote.

Trustees for the all-girls private school will conduct a national search for his replacement.

"The Board is already planning to undertake a national search to commence this summer, with new leadership selected by fall of 2013," said Lizzer Bright Graham, a 1977 gradate and chair of the search committee. "Our goal is to ensure a seamless and effective transition."
