Friday apartment fire was set, Chattanooga Fire Department says

photo Over two dozen people were evacuated from an eight story highrise on E. 10th Street after a fire broke out in the residential building.

A fire that forced an evacuation Friday night at Whiteside's Faith Manor on East 10th Street was deliberately set, the Chattanooga Fire Department said.

In a news release, spokesman Bruce Garner said a resident with mental health issues started the fire in his own eighth-floor apartment shortly before 10 p.m.

He was uninjured and city firefighters put the fire out before it spread to other apartments, Garner said. Residents on the seventh and eighth floors were evacuated while the fire was contained and the building ventilated, he said.

The resident was checked at Erlanger hospital and then taken to Moccasin Bend hospital for observation.

No charges are expected to be filed, according to the release.
