A 37-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison for the drunken-driving crash that killed his stepmother.

Michael Larry Smith pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and driving on a revoked license in a plea deal worked out between prosecutor Kate Lavery and public defender Steve Brown.

His stepmother, Vanessa Smith, 49, died in the crash off of Tallent Road in Collegedale.

Today Criminal Court Judge Rebecca Stern accepted the conditions agreed to by both sides and sentenced Smith to the eight-year term. Smith has been in custody since the Nov. 20, 2011, crash and will receive credit for the time he has served.
