Police: Children awake to find parents dead

SMYRNA, Tenn. - Police say two young children who awoke to find their parents fatally shot are safe.

Smyrna Police Chief Kevin Arnold said in a statement that the oldest child, an 8-year-old boy, went to a neighbor's residence Saturday morning and told them his parents were dead. Arnold said officers have determined that 37-year-old Adytia Ramotar killed 34-year-old Sharon Forbes and then turned the gun on himself. The statement says Ramotar and Forbes had divorced, but were attempting to reconcile.

Three children in the home at the time of the shooting weren't harmed. Police say the 8-year-old and a 6-year-old were the couple's children. A 2-year-old child was a nephew.

Arnold says the children will be handed over to family members.

Police said both Ramotar and Forbes were natives of Guyana.
