A 3-month-old girl died from numerous blows to the head, leaving her small skull cracked like an eggshell, according to a Hamilton County medical examiner's report.

Mia Elizabeth Fry died in the care of her aunt, Jessica Lynne Fax, while her parents were working.

The medical examiner's report, released this week, shows the infant's skull had as many as five large fractures with smaller ones spreading out around them, according to diagrams. She also sustained brain swelling and bruises, the report stated.

Additional tests are pending, including examination and analysis of microscopic samples of tissues to determine the extent of internal injuries, said Bruce Wainer, Hamilton County associate medical examiner.

The tests will help determine whether the child was struck multiple times on the top of the head or if she was slammed against a surface, he said.

"My feeling is that it was multiple times, but I want to analyze all of the data first," Wainer said.

Fax, 28, told police she dropped the baby, fed her and put her to bed, according to an arrest report. Her story was not consistent with the baby's injuries, authorities said, because the area where Fax said she dropped the child had new carpet and padding.

Fax's next court date is set for Oct. 30 before Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Ronald Durby.
