Police: Shooting appears random

Chattanooga police do not think the 64-year-old woman who was shot Friday night at 2008 Blackford Street was targeted, public information officer Sgt. Wayne Jefferson said Saturday.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was sitting on her daughter's front porch just before 10:30 p.m. when she was shot in the leg, Jefferson said. Her injury is not life-threatening.

She told police she heard the shot but couldn't tell where it came from, Jefferson said.

Police have no suspects in the case, and the investigation is ongoing.

Vacant building burns on Central

A large fire broke out in a vacant Chattanooga building early Saturday evening.

Eight fire companies responded to 1010 Central Ave. at 6:38 p.m.

Firefighters pinpointed the blaze on the second floor of the building and got the flames under control within 15 minutes, just as it started to break through the roof.

The 911 Communications Center received numerous calls about the fire because the flames could be seen from a long distance away, spokesman Bruce Garner said in a news release. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
