The Soddy-Daisy City Commission passed an ordinance on second reading making Brumlow Hollow Road a city street during a special meeting called by Commissioner Geno Shipley Oct. 23. The ordinance passed by 3-2 vote, with Vice Mayor Janice Cagle and Commissioner Shane Harmon voting against it.
"We took it in as a city street because they're taxpayers," said Shipley, adding that residents of the road already receive city services such as garbage pickup.
On Oct. 24, the day after the ordinance passed, city officials immediately began clearing brush off side areas of the street and filling potholes to make it possible for residents to enter and exit their property freely, he added.
Shipley first proposed the ordinance at the Oct. 18 commission meeting, stating that rutted areas in the road were making it impassable for some residents. Last tar-and-chipped in the 1960s, the road has been there for many years but was left out when the city chose to annex nearby areas, he said.
"If people live here long enough and live on one of these streets that's been overlooked, as long as it's not a driveway and there's evidence it was once a road, I feel we should help the people," he said.
The ordinance passed by 4-1 vote on first reading, at which point Harmon voted in favor of adding the road to the city while all other votes were consistent with those on second reading.
