Walnut Commons

Work began today on what will be the largest apartment complex built in downtown Chattanooga in a generation.

Walnut Commons, when finished in about a year, will hold 100 apartments with rents in the range of $750 to $1,200 a month, said Bob McKenzie, a partner in the project.

The $11 million, 100,000-square-foot structure also will hold a new Little MIss Mag Early Learning Center to enable it to serve more families, officials said.

John Clark, another member of the development team, said the project has been "very difficult, very complicated, very worthwhile."

Located at Riverfront Parkway and Aquarium Way, the building was originally proposed six years ago.
