A Whitfield County sheriff's deputy is on paid leave as he is being investigated for allegedly pawning his county-issued rifle and shotgun for cash.

Authorities said the sheriff's office pawn unit discovered that Chris Hammontree pawned his weapons at the American Pawn shop.

If the allegation is true, Hammontree could face criminal charges for taking someone else's property for his own benefit, Maj. John Gibson said.

He said the case will be turned over to the Conasauga District Attorney's Office once the internal investigation is done.
