Firefighters rescued a cat from behind a toilet this afternoon during a fire that caused considerable damage to a Brainerd home.

At 4:30 p.m., the Chattanooga Fire Department received the call to 3901 Monte Vista Drive. The fire was put out quickly, containing damage to the basement and rear of the house, said department spokesman Bruce Garner in a news release.

Residents John and Susan Lazenby got out of the home uninjured, but noticed that their cat was missing. Capt. Carlos Hampton and Lt. Jenny Parker went back in to search for their pet, which they found in a bathroom.

Once outside, the cat was having trouble breathing, so oxygen was given through an animal mask, Garner said. The cat seemed fine when they left, he said.
