After years of planning, demolition began today on a half dozen buildings on Brainerd Road near Chattanooga Airport, turning a slice of the major artery into green space with hopes if easing flooding in the area.

"It helps the city in the movement of stormwater," said Airport President Terry Hart.

The work near Jubilee Drive also bolsters safety by extending the landlocked airport's runway protection zone, officials said.

The effort involves demolishing the buildings, putting in grass, trees, and walking paths and is financed mainly from Federal Aviation Administration funds, according to city and airport officials.

The cost of the project is $4.3 million including land acquisition.
