It's not hard for the actors of East Hamilton High to get into character for their upcoming performance of Disney's "High School Musical." As the curtains rise on EHS' theater, the dozens of teenagers take the stage as high school students.

The story taps many high school issues, such as fitting into cliques, schoolwork and pressure, love, friends and family.

That's why the group picked "High School Musical," said assistant director and sophomore Sam Mulligan.

"We wanted a musical and we wanted something everyone knew and was familiar with," she said. "It's popular and kids can relate."

Mulligan said as a middle school student she always enjoyed watching the high schoolers perform musicals, so she initially became involved as an assistant when she entered high school herself. Now, as assistant director, she can be found communicating on lights and music with the tech group that operates behind the scenes, and making sure things go smoothly.

"I wanted to get involved, and I have always liked theater," she said.

Mulligan, director and drama teacher Jim Veenstra and the rest of the cast and crew have been hard at work all semester working on the musical. They are performing it at the school at 7 p.m. April 12, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 13, and at 3 p.m. April 14.

"We've really come a long way with this one," said Mulligan. "It's definitely worth coming out to see."

Tickets are $7 per adults, $4 for student.
