National Coalition of 100 Black Women member Deborah Flagg said she is among many women in Chattanooga who want to show youth a path to success that does not include violence and gangs.
"We want to prepare them for more education and self-assurance," said Flagg, fundraising chairwoman for the organization.
The Chattanooga chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women is encouraging all youth and adults to attend the "Let's Save Our Sons And Daughters" Spring Banquet on May 2.
Deborah R. Houston, of Rochester, N.Y., author of "Father Knows Best," will be the speaker.
Flagg said the banquet is intended to bring the community together and raise scholarships for youth to attend college. The local organization distributed $12,000 in scholarships in 2012. Flagg said she hopes to at least match that at this year's banquet.
From 300 to 400 people are expected to attend, said Carolyn Jones, president of CJ Enterprises and founder of the Chattanooga chapter.
"We want to encourage our youth to stay alive, graduate from high school and become productive citizens in the community," Jones said. "The number of murders among young people [is] increasing. We want to be a part of the solution."
Ann Jones-Pierre, manager of the Church Koinonia Federal Credit Union, said she is taking a student whom she mentors to the banquet.
"I believe if every organization will do something, then we will reach people and be more effective in the community," she said.
Youth ministries from various churches also have been invited to attend, said Flagg.
Deborah Maddox, youth adviser at Second Missionary Baptist Church, said she's encouraging all young people at her church to attend.
"They [100 Black Women] are creating opportunities so that our young people can network and broaden their horizon," said Maddox.
