HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - One of two men convicted in the 2008 death of University of North Carolina Chapel Hill president Eve Carson is to be resentenced.
Twenty-two-year-old Laurence Alvin Lovette is to go before an Orange County judge today.
The state Court of Appeals ordered that Lovette be resentenced after a U.S. Supreme Court decision. The high court ruled that an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole is unconstitutional if the defendant was under age 18 at the time of the crime.
Lovette was 17 when Carson was killed. He was convicted of premeditated murder, kidnapping and robbery.
Prosecutors plan to argue that the original life sentence is appropriate.
The Athens, Ga., woman was abducted from her apartment and killed after the men used her debit card to get cash.
