MARIETTA, Ga. - An investigator testified Friday that a Brunswick teenager accused of the shooting death of a baby challenged officers about a lack of evidence.
Detective Roderic Nohilly testified in Marietta in the murder trial of 18-year-old De'Marquise Elkins.
Nohilly said Elkins told officers in a pre-arrest questioning that he had nothing to do with the crime and he was sleeping alone at his aunt's home when it occurred March 21 in Brunswick.
The detective said officers later got an arrest warrant for Elkins. As they were handcuffing him, Nohilly said Elkins told officers they didn't have anything on him. He quoted the teen as saying, "Y'all ain't got no gun. Y'all ain't got no fingerprints."
Nohilly said Elkins saw another detective smile, and the teen said, "Oh, got the gun?"
Investigators had found a .22-caliber revolver in a pond based on information from Elkins' mother and sister.
The Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/1daswrF ) reported Superior Court Judge Stephen Kelley allowed the testimony over objections from defense attorneys.
Elkins is charged with murder in the shooting of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in a stroller during a botched attempt to grab a purse from the child's mother. The trial is in Cobb County because of extensive news coverage in Glynn County.
