Chattanooga's Amazon distribution center was expected to log its busiest day ever today.
Several thousand employees at the Enterprise South industrial park facility were using all of the huge center's space - the size of 28 football fields - to ship its share of Amazon's projected 26.5 million orders on Cyber Monday.
"It's our biggest shopping day of the year," said Amazon spokeswoman Kiesha Cochrane as she stood on a mezzanine overlooking scores of workers processing inbound goods in the 1.2 million-square-foot facility.
Employees arriving for work in time for the 8 a.m. shift negotiated long lines of traffic trying to squeeze into the distribution center's mammoth parking lot, which appeared to be at least 80 percent full.
"We're staffed up," said Cochrane about the nation's No. 1 Internet retailer. "It will be busy through Christmas."
