Madison County, Tenn., sheriff arrested on assault charges

JACKSON, Tenn. - Authorities say a Tennessee sheriff has been arrested, accused by one of his deputies of sexually assaulting her at her home.

The Jackson Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1ittLVy ) Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork was taken into custody in Chester County. A clerk says Woolfork was indicted on charges of attempted aggravated sexual battery and domestic assault.

Woolfork was arrested on Monday and released the same day on a $20,000 bond.

Woolfork's attorney, Mark Donahoe, said the sheriff has done nothing wrong and the allegations against him are baseless.

The indictment came after the deputy told police that Woolfork assaulted her on Oct. 10. She also received an order of protection against Woolfork that the sheriff is appealing.

The Associated Press does not normally name people who say they are victims of sexual assault.
