IRWINVILLE, Ga. - The leaders of a south Georgia county say community members and the Sons of Confederate Veterans group have stepped forward to stave off the closure of a Civil War historical site.

WALB-TV reports the Sons of Confederate Veterans have pledged up to $25,000 to keep the 13-acre Jefferson Davis Memorial Historic Site in Irwinville open. Irwinville is about 100 miles south of Macon.

The park is where Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, was captured by Union forces at the end of the Civil War.

Supporters of the park met with Irwin County Commissioners Tuesday and Commission Chairman, Joey Whitley, says community members are working to re-establish a friends group to support the park.

The park was in danger of closing because of budget concerns.
