Police determine identity in Geraldine, Ala., homicide

Autopsy results have determined the identity of a person found dead in a vehicle Tuesday in Geraldine, Ala.

Gary Lee Willis, 38, of Boaz, Ala., was found dead in a car along County Road 135 Tuesday after Geraldine Police Chief Nelson Gregory responded to a car on fire call. After extinguishing the fire, Gregory found a body in the vehicle, which launched an investigation to the owner of the car and the body's identity.

Despite the blaze, Willis' cause of death has been determined as being from multiple gunshot wounds. The car was determined to be from Etowah County, Ala., and belongs to a person who has been listed as missing.

Several leads are being pursued at this time, DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said, and will include the help of DeKalb County, Etowah County and Marshall County police and drug units.

"We are working hard to follow these leads," Harris said. "Our people were out all night and additional officers were assigned (Wednesday) to help in getting this case solved."

Any person with information on this case is being asked to call the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office at 256-845-3801.
