A deputy court clerk in Franklin County, Tenn., has been fired after state auditors found more than $3,000 missing from the clerk of court's office.
The cash shortage was discovered in accounts for General Sessions and Circuit courts in September 2012, according to the investigative audit performed by the Tennessee comptroller's office.
Robert Baggett, clerk for General, Circuit, Sessions and Juvenile courts of Franklin County, wrote in the audit that he called in the comptroller and the district attorney's office when he learned of the cash shortage.
Auditors found the former clerk "diverted cash collections and delayed making deposits to the official bank account ..." Investigators traced the skimming to a specific person because each deputy clerk had unique log-ins for the computer system.
Baggett said his office is trying to recover the missing money and has changed office procedures to prevent future problems.
