Friday brought new twists in the apparent road-rage slaying of 39-year-old Norman Alex Gallman.
Gallman's friends and family attended funeral services for the Ringgold, Ga., man only feet from the spot where he was fatally shot around 9 a.m. Tuesday.
At the same time, an attorney tried to secure a "significantly reduced" bond for the accused shooter, Richard Manning, saying the 62-year-old might not live until Monday in his current health.
Attorney Lloyd Levitt said medical personnel at Hamilton County Jail, where Manning has been held since Tuesday, are "attempting to, at least, administer the appropriate medications" for Manning, who has cancer, out-of-control diabetes and who needs a CPAP breathing apparatus at night.
"I just don't think the jail's a place he should be at, at this point in time," Levitt said.
He said Manning's condition has declined dramatically in only a few days -- so much so that he doesn't even know if Manning will live until a scheduled bond hearing Monday. Even if he does, Levitt said Manning likely is not well enough to make any future hearings.
"I'm hopeful that we can get him out Monday, if he's still here," Levitt said Friday afternoon.
On Wednesday, Amy Gregory, co-owner of The Shooter's Depot where Manning has been a certified arms trainer for years, also said Manning is "in very, very poor health." She said he has missed work in recent months, especially after he had surgery to remove a tumor and suffered complications from chemotherapy treatment.
Manning is scheduled to appear before Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Christine Mahn Sell on Monday. He faces criminal homicide and aggravated assault charges.
Gallman's funeral services were conducted by Chattanooga Funeral Home at its East Chapel location on Moore Road.
The site is located on the other side of Interstate 24 from the intersection of South Moore and North Terrace roads, where the shooting took place.
Gallman was fatally shot when he got out of his car and walked back to Manning's which had pulled up tight to his at the intersection, police said.
Gallman was laid to rest in Dalton, Ga., at West Hills Cemetery after Friday afternoon's service.
