Toomer's Oaks to be removed from Auburn campus

AUBURN, Ala. - Officials at Auburn University have announced the Toomer's Oaks will be removed from campus.

University officials made the announcement Friday and said in a release that the trees are unlikely to survive despite efforts to save them after they were poisoned with a powerful herbicide.

Harvey Updyke Jr., the man accused of poisoning the trees, is set to go to trial April 8. University officials say a new landscaping plan will be unveiled and the school will host a block party at Toomer's Corner April 20 to give fans a final opportunity to gather near the landmarks before they're removed.

The school plans to construct alternate structures students and fans can gather around following big wins and other special occasions.
