Broken hydrant floods part of west M.L. King Boulevard

photo West Martin Luther King Boulevard was shut down Saturday after car hit a fire hydrant, resulting in a broken water main beneath the road.

The water is back on for residents in the Towers Apartments on the Westside after a car crash resulted in a broken water main on west M.L. King Boulevard.

Tennessee American Water has restored water to the high-rise residents and the BlueCross BlueShield building as crews begin working to repair the broken main.

The damage happened about 11 a.m. when a vehicle slid into a fire hydrant. The impact broke the underground main, Tennessee American spokeswoman Lauran Vinson said.

The Holiday Inn Express is still without water and it wasn't known when service would be fully restored, Vinson said.
