Lawmaker looks to allow guns at elementary schools

ATLANTA - A Republican state Senator has introduced a bill allowing local school boards to decide whether to let elementary school employees carry guns on campus.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Sen. Ronald B. Ramsey of Decatur - who is also chief legal officer for the DeKalb County School District - filed the Elementary School Protection Act Friday.

The bill would require employees to have five years of law enforcement experience and participate in a peace officer training course before carrying weapons on campus, at school functions or on school buses.

A House committee is already considering a bill that would let local school boards choose to designate administrators to carry weapons, provided they receive training in handling firearms.
