Emergency Preparedness Fair is slated for Feb. 23

As the Scenic City gears up for the spring season when severe weather is a common problem, one local church wants to make sure residents are as ready as they can be.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 3067 Ooltewah-Ringgold Road, is hosting an Emergency Preparedness Fair Saturday, Feb. 23 from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

"I think everyone will go away from the fair with something useful so that if they're ever the one involved in an emergency, they'll be better prepared," said event publicity chairwoman Cindy Adamz. "Being prepared takes some of the fear away."

Featuring dozens of local organizations, the fair will offer classes for kids, teens and adults as well as a blood drive and presentation by U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, Tennessee's third congressional district representative. Classes range in topic from chain saw safety and water purifying techniques to making your own bread or learning to cook with legumes.

One of the highlights will be a panel discussion presented by survivors of the April 27, 2011 tornadoes.

"With the tornadoes and even the weather these past few weeks we've had so many issues," said Adamz. "We've always been active in helping with tornado relief and we thought this would be a benefit to the entire community."

The event is free and open to the public. The committee hopes people across Hamilton County and North Georgia will attend, said Adamz.

"There will be something for everyone," she said. "It should be a lot of fun as well as informative."
