As many as 50 staff members from the city's recreation department began "active shooter" training this morning at the Chattanooga Police Department.

Brian Smith, public relations coordinator for the city of Chattanooga parks and recreation, said due to recent shootings nationwide, administrators wanted to increase the amount of training and add to measures already in place.

"This is a proactive approach," Smith said. "We are here to let community center staff, let our community staff managers, know and understand what the procedures are when working with the police department."

Smith declined to detail what the training entails for staff members at nearly 20 facilities, citing security concerns.

Police Chief Bobby Dodd said the classroom training will help prepare rec center staff for unpredictable situations and how to work with police.

"This helps law enforcement handle the situation more efficiently and as calmly as possible," he said in a news release.
