Erlanger Health System trustees hired a new chief executive officer Monday night during a 16 minute meeting.

Trustees voted 5 to 3 to offer Kevin Spiegel the position during a called meeting. The board also was authorized to negotiate a contract with the Memphis health care executive.

Then trustees agreed to make the hire unanimous.

Trustees met privately for 45 minutes before their public vote. Chairman Ron Loving said trustees discussed only parliamentarian rules for the meeting.

Search committee chairwoman Phyllis Miller reviewed the committee's work over the last year in an effort to hire a successor to Jim Brexler.

She called the process "thoughtful" and deliberate.

Miller then made a motion to hire a CEO, which was seconded.

Trustee Russell King said he would vote against the move. Trustees Kim White and Donnie Hutcherson said the process should move forward.

King was the only trustee to vote against the motion.
