Memphis Police officer involved in crash that killed 2 is fired

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis police say that an officer who was involved in a fatal crash that left two people dead has been fired.

A Memphis Police Department statement said that 23-year-old Officer Alex Beard was terminated after an administrative hearing Monday.

Police said Beard was responding to a call on Aug. 26 when he struck the passenger side of a 1996 Mercury Mystique that was trying to turn left. Killed were 54-year-old Delores Epps and 13-year-old Mackala Epps. Two other people were injured.

The Epps' were visiting from Senatobia, Miss., for a relative's 50th birthday party.

Police said Beard violated policies related to responding to calls and personal conduct. Police have said that Beard did not have his lights or siren on when the crash occurred.
