'Voter Perks' campaign today at Glass Street block party

Wear an "I Voted" sticker to the Build a Better Block party on Glass Street today and you can score free coffee and doughnuts, discounts at Rock Creek Outfitters and other premiums.

If you need a ride to the polls to get a sticker, you can get that at the block party, too, according to organizers of the Voter Perks get-out-the-vote event that is being held in conjunction with the block party.

Enoch Elwell, one of the organizers, said in a news release that local businesses, the Glass House Collective and others are hoping to boost historically low turnouts for Chattanooga mayor and council elections. Early voting is under way and continues through Thursday. Election Day is March 5.

Through Election Day, people presenting "I Voted" stickers can get free perks at participating businesses: Coffee from the Camp House, bagels from Neidlov's, mini-pie from Fork & Pie Bar and more (details at creativecitizenship.com).

"What's really exciting about this is that it is a coming together of local businesses, the Glass House Collective's highly engaged young community leaders and Councilwoman Carol Berz's Get out the Vote Campaign," Elwell said.

Berz, who represents District 6 and is unopposed in her re-election bid, will drive a bus from the party to the polls at noon. She'll stop by her campaign headquarters for a free cookout on the way back.

The bus also will run until 2 p.m. at Brainerd Village, 5896 Brainerd Road, according to the release.
