Police News: 3 hurt, 1 critically in altercation

Semi winds up in Ridge cut trees

A tractor-trailer blocked traffic on westbound Interstate 24 Tuesday morning after the driver lost control on Missionary Ridge.

The truck lost traction while merging from the center lane into the right lane, causing the semi to wind up over the guardrail and in the trees. Chattanooga police spokesman Officer Danny Jones said no one was injured in the incident, which occurred about 11:45 a.m., though it caused traffic backups.

No citations were issued as witnesses told police the truck was traveling under the speed limit and the driver didn't appear to be breaking any laws.

Police say injuries from a hammer put a Crossville, Ala., man in an intensive-care unit after he broke into an acquaintance's home shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve.

DeKalb County, Ala., Sheriff Jimmy Harris said in a news release that Eugene Johnson, 58, kicked in the door of a home at 4801 County Road 24, west of Crossville.

The home was occupied by Donald Phillips, 41, and Amanda Michelle Thompson, 33.

All three were injured in an altercation -- Johnson from a hammer and Phillips from the handle of an ax. The sheriff said all three were taken to Marshall Medical Center South for treatment; Johnson later was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he remains in the ICU.

No charges have been filed, though the case remains under investigation.
