Former Murray County deputy indicted

A former Murray County Sheriff's deputy has been indicted on charges of obstructing a pending civil rights investigation that involved a former magistrate judge in Murray County.

Joshua Greeson, 25, is charged with lying to agents and concealing information after he pulled Angie Garmley over in a traffic stop this summer and found methamphetamine under the driver's side rear wheel of the vehicle, said federal prosecutors in a press release.

Charges were later dismissed against Garmley, whose accusations against former Chief Magistrate Judge Bryant Cochran led to his resignation and the current federal investigation.

Investigators discovered that the drugs had been planted, not by Greeson, but he had lied and deleted information relevant to the investigation from his cell phone, said Sally Yates, U.S. Attorney of the Northern District of Georgia. Greeson was then fired from the sheriff's department on Aug. 29, along with his supervisor, Capt. Michael Henderson, who is Cochran's cousin.

Now Greeson faces charges that carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000. Greeson will be arraigned at 2 p.m. today.
