Police investigate the scene of a shooting Sunday night in the 3700 block of Rossville Boulevard. Three people were shot but police didn't believe their injuries were life-threatening.Sunday school was letting out at New Covenant Church on Clio Avenue. Sunday school teacher Nicole Reeves was walking out into the dark when the rapid pop-pop-pop of gunfire sounded nearby.
"It was about 6:30 or 7. I was bringing the kids out of Sunday school," Reeves said.
Reeves had just stepped into the parking lot of the church, a few hundred yards from the scene. As soon as she heard the shots, she hurried the children back inside the classroom.
"You got to think about the kids," she said. "I told them to get back inside, to stay away from the windows and to get down."
Reeves said she heard 10 to 15 shots. Looking down the block, she saw several cars speeding away from the area around the Rossville Corner Market in the 3700 block of Rossville Boulevard.
Chattanooga police said three people were shot about 6:30 p.m. All three were taken to the hospital, but no information was available Sunday night about the circumstances of the shooting or the victims' names or conditions.
According to Coy Reeves, Nicole Reeves' husband, the shots were fired by people in two vehicles that appeared to be driving toward each other. WRCB-TV 3 reported, though, that police believe there was only one shooter.
Police cordoned off the crime scene with yellow tape and worked to collect evidence while neighbors clustered on the sidewalk to exchange stories and reactions.
Resident Keisha Wright was surprised by the violence.
"It's shocking. I love this neighborhood," she said. "This is a good neighborhood."
There have been six other shootings in Chattanooga so far this year.
