Derek Dooley's firing as the University of Tennessee football coach isn't stopping him from moving up a level.

Just days after being hired as a television analyst for ESPNU's coverage of national signing day, Dooley is reportedly about to become an assistant coach in the NFL.

NFL analyst Adam Schefter reported on ESPN's website Saturday night that the Dallas Cowboys are set to hire the 44-year-old coach as wide receivers coach, citing a league source.

Dooley was let go in Knoxville in November as the Vols completed their third consecutive losing season, the longest stretch in program history. Dooley compiled a 15-21 record at UT and had previously been head coach at Louisiana Tech.

Dooley would replace Jimmy Robinson in Dallas. ESPN said Robinson would move to a consultant role with the team.

Dallas head coach Jason Garrett worked with Dooley in 2005 and '06 on the Miami Dolphins staff of current Alabama coach Nick Saban. Dooley coached tight ends in Miami while Garrett was the quarterbacks coach.

Last season Dallas was third in the NFL in total yards and yards per game.
