The Chattanooga Times Free Press received 27 awards in the University of Tennessee/Tennessee Press Association 2013 contest.
The newspaper won six awards for first place, three for second place, four in third place, 10 in fourth place and four in fifth place.
First-place awards included the following categories: Local Features (staff writers Joan Garrett McClane, David Cook, Yolanda Putman, Casey Phillips an Todd South and staff photographers John Rawlston and Patrick Smith ), Best Sports Writing (staff writers David Paschall, Mark Wiedmer, Stephen Hargis, Gene Henley and Lindsey Young), Best Personal Humor (columnist David Cook), Best Business Coverage (staff), and Headline Writing (weekend editor Dan Woods). Staff writer Judy Walton and editorial writers Drew Johnson and Harry Austin won the Edward J. Meeman Foundation and Public Service first-place award for the series, "Justice in Question."
The Times Free Press competed in the highest circulation category against The Memphis Commercial-Appeal, The Tennessean and the Knoxville News Sentinel.
The Tennessean won the overall General Excellence award.
The Washington Newspaper Publishers Association judged 1,485 entries from 74 newspapers.
The awards were presented during a luncheon in Nashville.
