Former Times Free Press reporter Chris Carroll becomes press secretary to U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper

Chris Carroll, previously a staff writer in the Washington Bureau of the Chattanooga Times Free Press, has been named press secretary for U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn. His appointment becomes effective Aug. 5.

Carroll is a graduate of the honors program of East Tennessee State University. He previously graduated from Red Bank High School.

He had won a number of journalism awards with the Times Free Press, including winning a first-place for tornado coverage with then staff writer Pam Sohn in the deadline reporting category of the Tennessee Associated Press Managing Editors competition.

Carroll interned with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart during college.

Carroll succeeds Katie Hill, who has become press secretary for former Congresswoman Gabby Gifford's Americans for Responsibile Solutions.
