Man fleeing Georgia police plunges to his death in ravine

MACON, Ga. - Authorities say a man fleeing from police plunged an estimated 50 to 60 feet to his death in a deep ravine in Macon.

The Telegraph reports that the chase and fall happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, behind stores on Presidential Parkway.

Macon Police Chief Mike Carswell said the ordeal began when an officer spotted a vehicle with two occupants behind a closed sporting goods store. A police statement says the officer began questioning the men, and one became combative so the officer pepper-sprayed him and took him into custody.

Macon police Sgt. Melanie Hofmann said the other suspect ran and started climbing the fence. Hoffman said the officer warned him not to climb the fence because of the ravine below. But the man went over the fence anyway.
