EPB warns of scam calls

June 8th, 2013 by Staff Report in Local - Breaking News

EPB is warning commercial customers against a scam involving a false threat to cut off their service.

According to spokesman John Pless, several commercial customers have reported receiving calls saying their electric bills are past due and if payment isn't made by a certain time their service will be disconnected.

Pless said in a statement the caller asks the customer to go to an area CVS store and purchase a "Green Dot" debit card. The customer is asked to telephone a number in the 801 area code to make a payment with that "Green Dot" debit card. That area code covers northern Utah.

The spokesman emphasized that the calls are not from EPB.

"We will never call from, or ask you to do any business with an out-of-state phone number," Pless said.

Anyone who receives such a call can report it to EPB at 423-648-1372.
