Judge in Alabama orders restitution payments by middle school shooter

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A judge is ordering a teen-ager to pay $14,000 in restitution for killing a middle school classmate in 2010.

WAFF-TV reports that a judge ordered 17-year-old Hammad Memon to make the payments to cover funeral costs for Todd Brown.

Memon pleaded guilty last month to shooting the 14-year-old boy during a class change at Discovery Middle School in Madison in 2010.

The district attorney's office asked the judge to order restitution.

A judge previously sentenced Memon to 30 years in prison for the slaying.

Memon's parents are awaiting trial on charges of trying to help him escape following his arrest.
