SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. - The South Pittsburg Housing Authority will host its second annual Father's Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT today at Loyd Park.

A year ago, city officials noted the absence of dads in many South Pittsburg homes, so they organized the celebration to help bring those families back together.

"Our goal is to reunite families and have a bit of fellowship," City Housing Authority Director Terry Case said. "It's going to be a day for families. We're trying to pull the fathers and mothers back into the lives of their children and just have a fun day."

The event, free to the public, will include games for adults and children, music, food and drinks.

Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Bradford said the park's pool will be open during the event.

"Last year, we had the first one, and it worked out well," Case said. "We're expecting an even bigger crowd this year."

The housing authority will take "all the volunteers it can get" for the event, he said.

"If you don't want to volunteer, then you can come by anyway for some good food and music and games," Case said.

Mayor Jane Dawkins said she's glad the Father's Day Celebration is being held at the city park this year.

"At some point, you need to look around at what you have and utilize those things," she said. "It should be a wonderful event."
