The American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Tennessee is going to McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy, who will be honored on Saturday at a banquet in Nashville, a news release said.
Gordon Mikitka, commander of American Legion Post 11 in Etowah, began the award nomination earlier this year.
"The reason for this award is that the preamble of the constitution of the American Legion states that our organization is dedicated to to 'uphold and defend the constitution of the United States,' and the second thing is 'to maintain law and order.' And that's what it's all about," Mikitka said. "These things are what Sheriff Joe Guy is doing. He's making a difference in our community. He has done so much for our county. We've needed him for a long time."
