The city of Niota has shut down many of its functions after failing to receive liability insurance from the Tennessee Municipal League pool.

Mayor Lois Preece said the City Commission discussed how to go forward during a special called meeting on Monday night. Because the TML no longer will supply general liability insurance, Niota has shut down its police department, parks department, street department and library.

Preece said the McMinn County Wide Fire Department will take over the Niota Fire Department. The water department is still running, she said, and the garbage and sewer departments have been contracted to other companies.
