Train hits, kills man on tracks in southeast Georgia

SPRINGFIELD, Ga. - Authorities say a man is dead after he was struck by a train in southeast Georgia.

The Savannah Morning News reports the fatal collision happened Friday night near Springfield, about 25 miles northwest of Savannah.

Effingham County sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor says the conductor of the Norfolk Southern train told investigators he spotted a pedestrian on the tracks but didn't have enough time to stop the train.

The dead man's name was not immediately released to give authorities time to notify his family. Ehsanipoor says the sheriff's office is still investigating the collision along with Norfolk Southern.
