Tennessee was one of the first states to recognize Arbor Day in 1889.
Re-enactors in period military uniforms and active military personnel helped plant 10 trees during a special Arbor Day celebration at Chattanooga National Cemetery on Friday to honor America's veterans who fought in this country's wars and conflicts. A small crowd gathered for the tree dedication and ceremony.
The Arbor Day plantings are the last of more than 80 trees installed to replace more than 100 trees that were lost during the storms and tornadoes of the last several years, according to a news release.
During the celebration, the city was certified as a Tree City community for the 23rd consecutive year.
