UPDATE: Soddy-Daisy police have seized computers and cell phones which may be related to the incident.

A number of Soddy Daisy Middle School students have received threats from a user of a popular social media site, Principal Blake Freeman said today.

Freeman said an Instagram user had made inappropriate comments of a threatening nature to some of the students but that officials have the situation under control.

Freeman could not speak to the exact nature of the threats or how many students had received them.

"We have a safe environment," Freeman said. "We do have an extra police presence that I requested that have been here visible in the school."

Freeman said the school was cooperating with the Soddy-Daisy Police Department, which is investigating the threats.

"Of course we have some students that are a little nervous but our faculty and staff has been doing a great job being able to calm those concerns," Freeman said. "Any class that has had any questions - I have gone down to their class personally and sat and listened to them and answered any questions and been able to calm any anxiety that they may have."

Soddy-Daisy Police Chief Phil Hamrick said two or three detectives are working on the case. They are also working with Instagram, trying to get the IP address of the user, in an effort to identify them.

"We take any threat to a school seriously," he said.

Administrative staff and guidance counselors have been made available for additional concerns any students may have.
