Rangers rescue hiker who fell in Smokies

KNOXVILLE - Park rangers at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park rescued a 55-year-old man who fell from the icy slopes of Mount LeConte.

Dana Soehn, park spokeswoman, told the Knoxville News Sentinel ) that the victim fell about 10 feet and tumbled another 60 feet while hiking the mountain's Alum Cave Trail on Saturday.

The man, whose identity was not immediately available, was with a hiking party, who called emergency responders around 4 p.m. Rangers reached the man and carried him down the mountain. The man was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, but his current condition was unknown.

Soehn said he was in stable condition when he left, but had lost a lot of blood due to several lacerations.
