Chattanooga police officer shot on 4th Avenue

A Chattanooga Police officer who was shot earlier this evening suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and will be fine, according to department spokesman Sgt. Wayne Jefferson.

The officer, who has not been identified, was shot near East Lake Courts on 4th Avenue. He was responding to a theft call and encountered a disorder of some type, according to police spokesman Master Patrol Officer Nathan Hartwig.

The incident occurred around the 2500 block of 4th Avenue, Hartwig said. A massive manhunt now is under way. Sources said police know who the suspect is and are doing everything possible to locate him. Officers from mulitple area law enforcement agencies are pitching in, and the area has been roped off for a few blocks.

Chief Bobby Dodd and the department's command staff also is on the scene.

The injured officer, who is being treated at a local hospital, works the evening shift in Fox zone, which includes East Lake and the Rossville Boulevard areas, where the Chattanooga Police Department has recently run saturation patrols.
